Zyvex is the first molecular nanotechnology company
Seeking to understand and unlock the promising potential of nanoscience, Zyvex was founded in 1997 and successfully introduced products to a variety of industries, from semi-conductors to sporting goods, and received significant acclaim for its advances in commercializing molecular nanotechnology.
In June of 2007, Zyvex Performance Materials was spun out of Zyvex and relocated to Columbus, OH to pursue opportunities related to stronger, lighter materials based on its molecular chemistry technology.
Since arriving in Ohio, Zyvex Performance Materials has developed a broad product portfolio of nano-enhanced products. Zyvex Performance Materials also provides their molecular chemistry services to a variety of materials companies seeking to introduce nano-enhanced products to their portfolio.
In October of 2010, Zyvex Performance Materials announced its new name “Zyvex Technologies,” to better reflect its role as more than a materials provider. Zyvex Technologies continues to provide industry leading molecular chemistry services as well as design, engineer, and produce a variety of lightweight structures made possible through its understanding of materials science and nanotechnology.

Zyvex Technologies is a molecular
nanotechnology company. The word “nano” in nanotechnology derives from the term “nanometer”, which is one-billionth of a meter. Molecular nanotechnology is the manipulation of matter at the atomic or molecular level (on the length scale of approximately 1-100 nanometers). Materials that are characterized by structural features less than 100 nm can be broadly classified as nanomaterials and serve as the basis for the products we create Small cylinders of carbon atoms, or carbon nanotubes, are understood to be among the strongest materials known to man.

Small cylinders of carbon atoms, or carbon nanotubes, are understood to be among the strongest materials known to man. Since their first widespread recognition in 1991, researchers and scientists have developed a variety of new theories about how their properties can be transferred to modern products. Zyvex is the leader in developing chemistry solutions that unlock the potential of carbon nanomaterials into various products, including composite carbon fiber, thermoplastics, and adhesives.

Background Science
Due to their high-aspect ratio, small diameter, light weight, high mechanical strength, high electrical and thermal conductivity, carbon nanomaterials have been termed by experts as the material of the 21st century. Fueled by potentially important applications for these materials, nanomaterial research has increased to a surprising scale, opening new challenges and opportunities for the chemistry of these important structures. The physio-chemical nature of nanomaterials, which essentially can be viewed as fully conjugated polyaromatic macromolecules with a hollow, inert interior and reactive exterior and ends, drives applications in many fields such as composites, electronics, chemistry and biology.
While fundamental research of nanomaterials focuses on the intrinsic properties of individual nanotubes, many commercial applications heavily rely on the interactions of bulk nanotubes with their environment. Due to their high polarizability and smooth surface, nanotubes form strong van der Waals interactions between one another, reaching approximately 500 eV per/micrometer of nanotube length. The lack of process-ability and the difficult manipulation in any host matrix have imposed great limitations to the use of nanotubes in various applications. In addition, the poor solubility of nanotubes in organic solvents and aqueous solutions is a considerable challenge for their manipulation, separation and assembly which, in fact, are key factors in many applications. Furthermore, research shows that un-functionalized sidewalls produce poor adhesion between the nanotubes and the polymer matrix. As a result, previous research and study have failed to produce nanotube/polymer composites that fully realize important properties.

Piranha - Nano-Composite Marine Vessel
The Piranha is a technology demonstrator for our Arovex and Epovex materials technology. In order to showcase the 80% fuel efficiency improvements possible when switching from heavier, less durable materials, we created a powerful marine vessel that has unrivaled industry leading performance.
The Piranha is a project self-funded by Zyvex Technologies. After the initial launch of the first vessel, we created a division, Zyvex Marine, to further develop the concept vessel into production products and serve customers in the commercial and defense industries. The Piranha has been featured in a wide variety of publications and is recognized as the largest structure built entirely from nano-engineered composites.

Nanotechnology Development for Airbus
Zyvex Technologies is part of a 5 year research and development corsortium for Airbus led by the National Composites Center in Dayton, OH. Zyvex is providing technology related to the dispersion of carbon nanotubes intended to improve the mechanical properties of high performance composites.
”Airbus is proud and excited to be a partner with the NCC and Ohio as we work together to develop the composite technology for the next generation of aircraft,” said Allan McArtor, Chairman-Airbus Americas. “Airbus’ intent is to double its procurement spend in the U.S. over the next few years, and there’s no reason Ohio companies can’t benefit from that. The state has so much to offer, and we already have a growing and thriving partnership. I predict even more great things in the future.”

Enve Composites - Arovex Wheels
Zyvex worked with Enve Composites, easily one of our favorite customers with their 'kick ass' attitude. Enve Composites creates the world's toughest bikes for the world's toughest downhill races. They turned to Zyvex and our Arovex prepreg material to give their riders the winning edge.
Enve used Arovex in their new 'Mountain DH' rim product throughout their 2011 and 2012 race season. Typically, the previous aluminum rims were changed 180 times throughout a season, but the Zyvex Arovex rim lasted the entire season without a single replacement. These rims and other Enve products using Arovex are now available to the public in stores and at www.enve.com
