Zyvex Technologies Launches New Maritime Division: Zyvex Marine

New Division Ships First Production Nano-Composite Vessel

Columbus, Ohio and Seattle, Wash., – November 1, 2011 – Zyvex Technologies announced today that it has launched a new division, Zyvex Marine. The new division’s mission is to design and build the most advanced maritime platforms in the world. Zyvex Marine shipped its first production boat, a lightweight 54’ vessel, this month.

In early 2009, the world’s first commercialized carbon nanotube enhanced (CNTe) carbon fiber material, Arovex, enabled the design of a prototype vessel called the 540SE. Setting new standards for fuel efficiency and performance, the lightweight 540SE hull offered a 75% reduction in fuel consumption costs, translating to increased range and lower operating costs.

In 2010, Zyvex manufactured its first prototype craft, the Piranha, taking it from the drawing board and into the water in under one year. Setting new standards in range, speed, sea keeping and payload, the Piranha is a generational leap beyond boats built out of traditional materials like fiberglass or aluminum.

Science as Art

Zyvex Technologies scientist participates in “Science as Art Competition” and turns an image of nanomaterials into a geyser.

Dr. Iti Srivastava, a composite research scientist for Zyvex Technologies, has taken part in the Materials Research Society (MRS) annual “Science as Art Competition.” Dr. Srivastava’s piece “Old Faithful: A miniature,” is based on an optical micrograph of a nanocomposite used during advanced materials research at Zyvex Technologies.

To turn images of carbon and other materials on the molecular level into a piece of art, Dr. Srivastava applied a few subtle changes to supplement an abstract landscape. After a re-colorization, the particle on the nano scale resembles a giant force of nature. The pastiche is rendered and colorized, pastel shades magnifying the existing likeness to a natural geyser. The epoxy based nanocomposite is used in the commercial world on a prototype aerospace qualification effort.

Zyvex Technologies to speak at Chicago Ideas Week

Columbus, Ohio – October 10, 2011– The world’s first molecular nanotechnology company, Zyvex Technologies, announced today that its president, Lance Criscuolo, is speaking this week at the Kauffman Foundation Midwest Entrepreneur Summit that is part of the Chicago Ideas Week and being headlined by Former President Bill Clinton.

Chicago IDEAS Week brings some of the world’s top speakers together with the best Midwest thinkers to create an ecosystem of innovation, exploration, and intellectual recreation.

President of Zyvex Technologies, Lance Criscuolo, is slated to speak along with almost 100 others, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Mayor Rahm Emanual, Suzie Orman, Daisy Khan, Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Thomas Friedman. Criscuolo will give his perspective on attracting and retaining talent and leadership in the Midwest. Zyvex was the first company to use carbon nanotube technology to make a wide variety of products, everything from better baseball bats to lightweight boats.

“I’m delighted to be a part of Kauffman Foundation Midwest Entrepreneur Summit and Chicago Ideas Week. As a small business in a new technology industry, it’s critical to share and collaborate with the other entrepreneurs. Since choosing to move our headquarters to Ohio five years ago, we’ve leveraged the Midwest’s significant scientific, engineering, and materials talent. From our offices in Columbus, OH, we’ve assembled a $40B supply chain of industry partners to make nanotechnology a commercial reality. It’s still possible to grow and thrive in today’s economy and I’m looking forward to sharing our experience, ” said Criscuolo of Zyvex Technologies.

Chicago Ideas Week is spearheaded by Groupon co-founder Brad Keywell, who wanted ‘a great platform in the Midwest to help connect thinkers and doers who have a powerhouse of ideas.’ The week is intended to connect people who are active in the realm of innovation.

The panel discussion will be opened by J.B. Pritzker of New World Ventures and moderated by Kevin Willer, executive director of the Chicagoland Entrepreneurial Center. Panelists also include Matt Maloney founder of GrubHub and Marc Ecko, founder of the namesake global fashion empire.

What does a Zyvex treated carbon nanotube look like?

Dr. Jana and Dr. Feng from the University of Akron, with help from the Ohio Supercomputing Center, developed simulations to illustrate different carbon nanotube functionalization techniques, including our non-covalent bonding technology.

For perspective, a carbon nanotube (the green cylinder below) is about 1/50,000 the width of a human hair… (give or take a few nanometers of course)…
